Begin with the end in mind

Over the last three weeks I’ve delivered two sessions where “Begin with the end in mind” has come up as a learning point.

In fact one of the sessions was with recent graduates and they hadn’t heard of the phrase or Steven R Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (where the phrase comes from).

Its such as simple yet powerful point, that can really transform your performance and help you to stand out from the crowd.

You can read about it here but put simply, its about knowing what direction you are heading in and with an idea of what you are trying to achieve.  You don’t need to be too ‘narrow’ in your view which would stifle opportunities as you progress, but having a picture on what success looks like will help you keep on track and drive through to success.

It sounds like common sense and perhaps it is, but often people dive straight into solutions and ‘doing’ in their excitement  without pausing to check they understand why, i.e. What ‘end’ they are working to achieve.

It will further help to motivate you during the inevitable tough times and barriers that get in your way.

I strongly encourage you to read Steven Covey’s book.  This one habit is worth a read alone but all 7 will transform your career.
